  8. Where are diamonds created? (1) Diamonds are created deep under the surface of the Earth in the mantle. This happens around 140-190km down where the heat and pressure are high enough.

  9. How are diamonds transported to the surface of the Earth? (2) Diamonds are transported to the Earth’s surface by volcanic action under continental crust in kimberlite pipes.

  10. Where are diamonds found? (3) Diamonds are found in the earths surface in deposits of kimberlite (rock) known as kimberlite pipes.

  11. What type of rock are diamonds found in? (4) Diamonds can be mined direct from kimberlite pipes called open pit mines. Diamonds can also be found on flood plains where they have been eroded from the kimberlite by rivers.

  12. What are diamonds used for? (5) Diamonds are used as gemstones in jewellery due to their light reflecting properties and beauty. Diamonds are also used in industry for their hard properties in processes such as cutting of other materials.

  13. Which step is missing? We have found out how diamonds are formed, mined and used but what is the missing link from our story? Discuss in your pairs where you think the diamonds might be transported to and traded/sold?

  14. Transporting, Cutting, Polishing and Trading When diamonds are mined they must also be prepared for use, this preparation is called cutting and polishing. Following cutting and polishing the diamonds are transported to somewhere they can be sold or traded.

  15. Where are diamonds traded? Antwerp in Belgium has historically been extremely important to the diamond industry. Even though this industry has recently decreased 70% of the world’s diamonds still pass through Antwerp, Belgium to be traded (sold). Many people even sent their diamonds to Antwerp to be safeguarded during WW2.

  16. Mark on the following countries to show the journey of a diamond Mined- Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo, Australia, Russia and USA. Cut and polished- Belgium, India and Israel. Traded-Antwerp, Belgium. Sold- USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
