  2. Alliance Overview ED1SON alliance UK Power Networks (UKPN) are the company that delivers electricity to London, the East and South East of England and distributes approximately 27% of the UK's electricity, serving eight million customers. UKPN invests more than £500million in its networks every year and is responsible for over 130,000 substations and 170,000 km of overhead lines and underground cables. In a unique new partnership, UKPN and four key contractors joined up as one body in March 2015 to implement a major infrastructure programme over 12 years, and deliver over a £1billion investment in infrastructure.

  3. How ED1SON works ED1SON alliance

  4. Clancy Scope ED1SON alliance Clancy Docwra are currently delivering over 30 projects which vary from: • Replacement of existing circuits, with routes ranging from 500m to 12.6km • Includes the excavation and installations of ducting within roads • Includes the replacement of circuits within existing tunnel network • Cable installation and jointing • Commissioning of new and decommissioning of old circuits • Civil construction of new tunnels and substations within LPN (Greater London) • Civil modifications of existing buildings to replace transformers and switchgear • All non-contestable electrical enabling works for HS2 (All regions) • Several customer led connection schemes • The largest of which is the £70m Battersea Scheme

  5. Project Overview

  6. Project Overview • Tunnel route approx. 340m long • Vertical alignment approx. 20m deep • Tunnel to be constructed in London Clay strata Duchess Bridge New substation NwR shallow cutting Ex-Eurostar Viaduct 7-Track Viaduct TW Sewer Tunnel Top of London Clay Shaft Junction chamber Proposed cable tunnel Existing cable tunnel Stewart’s Road Cable Tunnel 13th December 2016

  7. Battersea Scheme – Stewarts Road Project Details: • Construction of a new shaft and spur tunnel to connect to the existing Wimbledon to Pimlico tunnel - COMPLETE • Construction of a new 132kV Substation building – PILING WORKS Complete • Installation of over 60km of 132kV Cable with the new and existing tunnels – Planned to commence January 2019

  8. Key Challenges Construction and connection of the new spur tunnel to the Wimbledon to Pimlico tunnel Existing tunnel made of wedge-block construction meaning any movement of material around the tunnel could result in failure and collapse Existing tunnel had live 132kV circuits already present that could not be switched out New spur tunnel had to cross several different rail lines, running across 2 bridges and 1 cutting Point of connection was directly beneath a 1.8m diameter brick built main sewer line and Battersea Park Bridge

  9. Breakthrough Existing Cable Tunnel Junction chamber Breakout (last ring) Junction chamber Breakout

  10. Solutions Construction and connection of the new spur tunnel to the Wimbledon to Pimlico tunnel The existing tunnel was to be supported with an internal metal frame so that collapse was not possible • However this compounded the challenge of how to protect the existing circuits within the tunnel

  11. Solutions Construction and connection of the new spur tunnel to the Wimbledon to Pimlico tunnel Before the protection to the structure of the existing tunnel, the existing circuits were to be protected with a timber ‘coffin’ with all materials pre-cut and jointed using nuts and bolts to negate the need to use drills within a confined space and around the live circuits

  12. Solutions Construction and connection of the new spur tunnel to the Wimbledon to Pimlico tunnel Early involvement with Network Rail during all design stages was essential in order to meet the tight programme • Throughout Feasibility, Concept and Developed Design, Network Rail were aware of our requirements and agreed our proposed design in a timely manner. Demonstration that the design would not affect the assets was required, along with regular monitoring during construction • Snapshot of the settlement calculations drawing for the Network Rail application

  13. Junction Chamber new tunnel existing tunnel

  14. Solutions Construction and connection of the new spur tunnel to the Wimbledon to Pimlico tunnel Similarly to NR, early involvement with Thames Water was also key to achieving approval to construct the connection chamber • There was a minor risk of potential damage to the brick sewer • The solution was to internally line the sewer so as to protect from potential failure • Following completion, it was proven that no 3rd party assets were affected during construction activities

  15. Damage assessment andasset protection Duchess Bridge

  16. The Team – Collaboration • Alliance Design starts • Tunnel Designer appointed • Tunnel construction begins • Consultation throughout • Tunnel construction complete • Substation construction begins Sep 2015 Sep 2017 Today Jun 2016 Nov 2017 Oct 2015 + others yet to be procured

  17. Collaboration & Success Nine Elms South Bank Cable Tunnel, win London Infrastructure Project of the Year at the Institute of Civil Engineering (ICE)! The Judges feedback; “This project was chosen as not only did this relatively young team overcome some significant technical challenges, which they solved with some innovative design and construction techniques, but they delivered a key piece of infrastructure to a much-needed part of London. This was done with an exemplary safety record, with a sensitive approach to managing noise and disruption to the local community, they engaged the local school throughout the project, and created a sense of ‘one team’ that the judges thought was seriously impressive.” LEFT TO RIGHT: George Pali (Clancy Docwra), Gerard Quigg (COWI), Damian McGirr (COWI), Mark Thurston, (CEO of HS2), Gary Dann (Joseph Gallagher), Paul Challinor (Joseph Gallagher), James Belcher (UKPN), Tony Matheson (Joseph Gallagher), Tony Rogers (UKPN), Martin McGovern (Clancy Dowcra), Joseph Gallagher (Chairman, Joseph Gallagher) Also shortlisted in this year’s British Construction Industry Awardsin the Utility Project of the Year category...
