Parklands Junior School • Maths Workshop - 2015
Contents • Methods of calculation • Facts and general knowledge • Using and applying • My Maths
New Primary Maths Curriculum • Clear expectations around written methods of calculation in addition to mental methods. • Children are expected to know their times tables up to 12 x 12. • More requirement for children to know about fractions and decimals. • Financial skills have been reinforced i.e money skills, working with percentages. • Less reliance on calculators.
Addition Standard method Quick and straightforward. Doesn't necessarily go through place value and children don't understand the values of digits. Children forget to add on the small 1
Addition YOUR TURN! 1753 + 853 = Addition using partitioning HTU + HTU 54 6 + 47 8 500 6 400 70 8 40 500 + 400 = 900 40 + 70 = 110 6 + 8 = 14 Now add all 3 numbers together: 900 + 110 + 14 = 1024
Addition 1753 + 853 1000 700 + 800 = 1500 50 + 50 = 100 3 + 3 = 6 1000 + 1500 + 100 + 6 = 2606
Subtraction Used more in lower school to allow children to understand that subtraction means counting up. Used more effectively in the context of time or money. Sam leaves home at 7.50am and arrives to school at 8.37am. How long was his journey? Number line 10mins 30mins 7mins 8.37 8.30 8.00 7.50 10mins + 30mins + 7mins = 47mins
Subtraction Number line Kate goes to the supermarket with £50.00. She buys some items and receives £27.25 change. How much did she spend?
Subtraction Number line Kate goes to the supermarket with £50.00. She buys some items and receives £27.25 change. How much did she spend? +£0.75 +£20.00 +£2.00 £27.25 £30.00 £50.00 £28.00 £20.00 + £2.00 + £0.75 = £22.75
Subtraction Standard method Quick and straightforward Can be difficult when doing a problem such as: 4000 – 781. Number line would then be more appropriate
Subtraction Decomposition (expanded subtraction): 782 – 467 = YOUR TURN! 2674 - 391 = 300 + 10 + 5 = 315
Subtraction • 2674 - 391 = • 2000 600 70 4 • 300 90 1 - 500 170 2000 200 80 3 2000 + 200 + 80 + 3 = 2283
Multiplication Standard method
Multiplication Ladder method: 565 x 7 = 565 x7 Children have a better understanding of place value 3500 420 35 (500 x 7) (60 x 7) (7x5) + 3955
Multiplication Grid method: When multiplying pairs of 2 digit numbers or more. 45 x 37 30 7 X 40 1480 185 + 1665 5
Multiplication Grid method: Your turn 67 x 45 40 5 X 60 7
Multiplication Grid method: Your turn 67 x 45 40 5 X 60 2700 315 + 3015 7
Multiplication 423 X 36
Division Standard - Short division
YOUR TURN! 173 ÷ 5 = Division Chunking: Involves repeated multiplication mentally
Using and applying Using your mathematical skills and applying them to problem solving. Magic square; Use the numbers 1-9 to fill in this square. Each row, column and diagonal must add up to 15.
Using and applying In this maze there are numbers in each of the cells. You go through adding all the numbers that you pass. You may not go through any cell more than once. Can you find a way through in which the numbers add to exactly 100?
