What's in the kit? • Rocks and minerals of Georgia • A magnifying glass • Two streak plates • A glass plate
We also had… • several large Georgia maps, including ones that showed the location of economic rocks and minerals and ones showing physiographic features • 8 team instructional notebooks that guided us through our study of Georgia’s rocks and minerals
Things We Learned First We learned that we use minerals in everyday life. They are important to the way we live because they are used in everyday items such as jewelry, cars, household appliances, and technology.
We also learned that knowing how to identify minerals can help us in later life. Say we want to become scientists and we were sent off to a site where we discovered a mineral that we did not know, we would have to use the mineral properties to classify this mineral. These minerals are very important.
What We Studied • Mineral Properties (color, luster, streak, crystal form, hardness, cleavage/fracture, density, and other useful properties) • Mineral Identification (We identified minerals by mineral properties.) • Occurrence and use of minerals. (Minerals such as pyrite, gold, and copper are used is electronic devices.)
Once we knew about and could identify many of Georgia’s important minerals, we used the kits to become familiar with a number of the rocks found in Georgia.
Here’s what we learned about rocks… • Rocks are classified by how they are formed. • Georgia’s geologic history gives us igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. • Georgia can be divided into different provinces characterized by the kinds of rock found there.
How we studied We worked in teams with the teacher available as we needed her.
We learned more about rocks and minerals and… learned more about working together.
Thanks so much!!!!!! Thank you to the Georgia Mineral Society for supply the funding for our Georgia rock and mineral kits. Thank you too to Jim Haege for the many specimens he supplied to us. These kits helped us further understand mineral and rock identification and so much more.
