Introduction Similarities can be found between the Fermilab Main injector and the present PS2. A comparison between them may allow us to learn about critical points for that kind of ring, especially for lattice design and beam operation. Antoine LACHAIZE - PS2 meeting 18/03/10
Lattice – basic parameters Except the length and the energy range, lattice parameters are very similar An imaginary gamma-t lattice has been investigate by D. Trbojevic for the Main Injector Antoine LACHAIZE - PS2 meeting 18/03/10

Lattice – basic parameters One half of the ring Lattice showing 2 normal FODO cells,4 DS cells and 3 SS half cells Antoine LACHAIZE - PS2 meeting 18/03/10
Lattice – magnets, defaults correction Dipoles Quadrupoles No problem for closed-orbit and chromaticity correction, good dynamic aperture. They made a conscious effort to keep the beam-pipe cross section as smooth as possible and used shielding bellows to reduce impedances Quadrupoles for half integer stop-band correction and octupole families. Beam operation Proton acceleration Coalescing at top energy in the Main Injector: five to seven bunches containing 6x1010 protons will be coalesced into a single bunch of 27x1010 protons in a 1.5 to 2 eV.s emittance. Antoine LACHAIZE - PS2 meeting 18/03/10
Main injector operation - issues The machine was relatively easy to commission and relatively robust to operate. Initial issues with e-cloud, the vacuum system has been “cleaned” up by the beam. The RF is probably the biggest issue, If the momentum spread is a bit to large from the booster, one part of the beam is outside the bucket and is lost during the ramp. Typically 95-98 % acceleration efficiency for 3x1013 injected protons. The collimation system captures 95 % of the beam lost Antoine LACHAIZE - PS2 meeting 18/03/10
Main injector improvements Lattice Larger horizontal apertures in injection/extraction regions. Standard missing dipole dispersion suppressor to avoid multiple types of quads and multiple length of dipoles. Imaginary gamma-t lattice ? RF They go through transition during acceleration and sometimes have a small loss. If they had a choice they’d inject above transition.
