So What Is Chlamydia • Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, a bacterium. Chlamydia can be transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.
Symptoms It is known as the "silent disease," because most people infected with it have no symptoms but here are some common ones. Symptoms: • Women • An increase in vaginal discharge caused by an inflamed cervix; • the need to urinate more frequently, or pain whilst passing urine; • lower abdominal pains; • irregular menstrual bleeding. • Men • A white/cloudy and watery discharge from the penis that may stain underwear; • a burning sensation and/or pain when passing urine; • pain and swelling in the testicles
Treatment of Chlamydia • If you have chlamydia, your doctor will prescribe oral antibiotics, usually azithromycin (Zithromax) or doxycycline. Your doctor will also recommend your partner(s) be treated as well to prevent reinfection and further spread of the disease.
Effect on Pregnancy and Newborns • Women who have Chlamydia during pregnancy tend to have higher rates of infection of the amniotic sac and fluid, preterm birth, and preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM). • If you are pregnant and infected with Chlamydia, there is a good chance that your baby will also contract the illness
Neonatal conjunctivitis is an infection caused by chlamydia that occurs in your baby’s eyes. • Symptoms of Chlamydia infection in the eyes generally occur within 10 days of birth. Although the baby will be alert and aware, his eyes will be irritated and red. Moreover, he may experience swollen eyelids and a discharge from his eyes. This discharge can range from watery to thick and yellowish in appearance.
