  1. WELCOME CALENDAR PROPOSAL

  2. EXISTING PROBLEMS WITH CALENDAR • 1. School district calendars have changed recently • The school year starts earlier in the fall and ends earlier in the spring Solution: FHSAA athletic calendar should change similarly

  3. EXISTING PROBLEMS WITH CALENDAR • 2. Basketball state series overlaps with FCAT testing • This impedes academic progress of these student-athletes Solution: Move up the basketball season

  4. EXISTING PROBLEMS WITH CALENDAR • 3. Scheduling difficulties brought about by shortened regular seasons • Open date in football eliminated 4 years ago • Volleyball season shortened due to changes in state series format Solution: Add 1 week to certain sports regular seasons

  5. EXISTING PROBLEMS WITH CALENDAR • 4. Cross country and swimming & diving championships on the same weekend • This forces student-athletes to make an unnecessary choice, especially in mid-size and smaller schools Solution: Separate these two events

  6. FALL SPORT CHANGES • Football—start practice one week earlier • 2-a-day practices could be possible • Preseason classics one week earlier • First playing date one week earlier • Extend regular season to 11 weeks (10 games) • State championship games for 6A, 5A, 4A, and 3A held the same weekend • State championship games for 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B may be held one week earlier • These classifications have only 8 districts

  7. FALL SPORT CHANGES Cont’d • Volleyball—start practice one week earlier • Preseason classics one week earlier • First playing date one week earlier • Extend regular season one week (previously shortened in 2004) • State series remains unchanged

  8. FALL SPORT CHANGES Cont’d • Swimming & Diving—start practice one week earlier • First contest date one week earlier • Extend regular season one week (previously shortened in 2002) • State championship meets remain unchanged

FALL SPORT CHANGES Cont’d • Cross Country—start practice the same week as current calendar • First contest date one week later • State series (district, region and state) all one week later • Golf—start practice one week earlier • First contest date one week earlier • State series (district, region and state) all one week earlier; state will now have advantage of being played in Daylight Savings Time.

  10. FALL SPORT CHANGES Cont’d • Bowling—remains unchanged • Fall Soccer—start practice one week earlier • First playing date one week earlier • Changes to the state series brought about by change to recognized sport status

WINTER SPORT CHANGES • Basketball, Winter Soccer and Wrestling—start practice one week earlier • Preseason classics one week earlier • First contest one week earlier • State series (district, region, state) all one week earlier • Exception: Girls Weightlifting—same as current calendar • Otherwise, sectional qualifying meets would be the first week back after winter break

SPRING SPORT CHANGES • Baseball and Softball—start practice one week earlier • Preseason classics one week earlier • First contest one week earlier • State series (district, region, state) all one week earlier • Track—start practice one week earlier • No change to first contest date or state series dates • Tennis, Boys Weightlifting, Boys Volleyball, Girls Flag Football, Water Polo—remain unchanged • These sports all finish well before the end of the school year
