Screencasting Tools • The screencasting tools we are going to exploring today are: • Video Anywhere – located within Blackboard on the Content Area Toolbar. You can record directly, and post to www.youtube.com . Captioning can be done directly within YouTube (after posting). • Camtasia Relay – https://relay.miracosta.edu/Relay/Campus licensed program (free to faculty) that can be used to record lectures. Lectures are captioned automatically using voice recognition. Lectures can be uploaded to either www.YouTube.com or Screencast.com • Jing - http://www.techsmith.com/jing.htmlQuick and easy recorder of up to 5 minute videos . Can only upload to Screencast.com . Best used for quick personalized tutorials that can be e-mailed to students.
Captioning - Why? • Distance education courses, resources, and materials must be designed and delivered in such a way that the level of communication and course-taking experience is the same for students with or without disabilities. • As we caption each video/multimedia presentation, we become closer to making our campus more accessible and inclusive of all students. • Some additional benefits to captioning videos: • · Your videos become searchable. For example, YouTube has added an Interactive Transcript feature. A student can search on a key term to go directly to the place where it is further explained; other platforms also support searchable video and more are moving in this direction. • · Your captions can be instantly translated into other languages using YouTube’s Translate Captions feature.
Captioning Information & DE Guidelines • California Chancellor’s Office Distance Education Accessibility Guidelines – http://www.htctu.net/dlguidelines/dlg_index.htmlOf particular relevance to captioning and multimedia are the guidelines found on pages 15-16 and 20-22. • Distance Education Captioning and Transcription Grant www.canyons.edu/captioningThe Chancellor’s Office of the California Community College has set aside funding to support the captioning of your course materials. Contact our Accessibility Specialist, Robert Erichsen, at rerichsen@miracosta.edu or 760-757-2121 extension 6684 for more information on how to take advantage of this grant. Many faculty have already participated in this grant opportunity over the past three years, and have shared positive feedback received from students. • Info on Section 508 - http://www.section508.gov/
Multimedia Hosting • YouTube -- Accounts are free to create. Go to http://www.youtube.com . You can use your existing Google account or create a new one just for your videos. If you want to upload videos that are more than 15 minutes long you must verify your account (also free). After account creation , click on Upload(near the top of the page on the right) Then click on Increase your limit (near the bottom of the page) and follow the directions.Set your videos to – Unlisted. This will make them unsearchable, meaning you have to have the URL or Embed code to watch them. • Screencast.com – Use this service only with Jing. Do not use for regular video hosting as it hosts the videos as flash and will cost $99.00 a year. Embed code used on this site has become out of date and Tech Smith doesn’t seem to be putting resources in to this hosting service.
1. Video Everywhere – YouTube in Blackboard • add quick webcam recordings or existing YouTube videos easily. • Link your existing YouTube Account to Bb – Then Select them and add them to your content easily from within Bb. No need to capture the embed code and input it within the HTML modeanymore. (video (4:33) | PDF)
New Content Editor • New Content Editor -handles copied-in HTML code much more effectively. The new editor also better handles copy-and-paste from Microsoft Word, makes it even easier to add/link to multimedia content, and more! (video (3:59) | PDF comparing old and new editors)
