Issues in Comparing Institutional Practices & Policies Susan Vajoczki CUR 2010
Inception Issues • Is their an institutional champion? Do you need a champion? • How amenable are administrators/funders to the initiative? • How much prior knowledge do the students have in research? • Are the conditions similar at your institution to commence this initiative?
Institutional Culture • What is the perceived appropriate role of undergraduate students in research? • What is the perceived appropriate role of instructional staff in undergraduate research? What is the student:instructional staff ratio? • What is considered acceptable output of research? • Is there institutional arrogance that will interfere in the knowledge translation of an initiative from one institution to another?
Sustainability Issues • Is their an institutional champion? Who will continue to champion the project? • Does the initiative have sufficient capacity (e.g., number of students impacted; depth of impact) • What is the commitment to ongoing funding vs one-time funding • Is the initiative driven from an innovation desire? • How will success be measured?
