Essential Skills To Become A Pro Photographer Technological skills Creativity Understanding the trends Delivering the best quality consistently Continuous learning and execution Digital marketing skills Patience and endurance 1. Technological skills – mastering the equipment, digital technology, image editing/processing It is mandatory to have some powerful technical skills to become a professional photographer. Unfortunately, digital photography is performed with cameras, lenses, flashes, accessories, computers and is associated with technology. If you want to become a professional, you must be able to deliver useful images to the client by using these gadgets effectively. Being able to differentiate between a host of camera or lens options or a variety of technologies helps a good photographer to make the right choices for a given job. 2. Creativity and thinking out of the box Creativity is everything in professional photography…It is the heart and soul of professional photography. Creativity is one of the most important skills to develop if you want to be a professional photographer. No one needs a template like outputs. What is creativity? It is doing things differently and aesthetically. It’s all about how the final output is packaged. Competition in the photography business is really challenging, and survival is decided by doing things differently. 3. Understanding the trends Photography has changed tremendously over the past ten years. Even the taste and needs of the clients have changed a lot. A professional photographer has to be very watchful to deliver the matching out-put based on the changing trend. Nowadays, the demand is not only regional but international. Clients ask for international standard work. The world is now tightly connected and the standards are set internationally.
4. Delivering the best quality consistently I always say that; anyone could give a great out-put in photography some time or other. But, a professional photographer delivers quality out-put consistently all the time, irrespective of the constraints. Consistency is the scale for judging someone as a professional photographer. 5.Continuous learning and execution There is a need to learn every day and update photography knowledge and skills. We see changes happening both technically and artistically on a day-to-day basis. If you lose the track of learning and you will miss out on the business. Continuous learning can be possible by attending various courses on photography. Participating in professional seminars and workshops can also help you stay updated. Learning through online platforms can also sometimes help. Courses and workshops will improve the skills required to do things right and differently. 6.Digital marketing skills and marking the presence effectively It is important to make your presence evident in the market. You need to remember professional photography is a business. Photography needs to be promoted continuously. Even if you have all the skills discussed so far, marketing needs to be done in every possible way just like any other business! Complete knowledge about social media or digital marketing is a must to become a professional photographer. I always tell my students that, ‘Selling is difficult than making’ 7.Patience and endurance I want to stress that there are no short cuts to become a successful professional photographer, I honestly did not come across anyone who became big through short-cuts in my experience. For that matter, no one has ever become a professional overnight. Photography being a scientific art, it needs to be practiced with passion and patience. ‘Art’ always becomes better with practice! You must be willing to wait and pursue with constant endurance. Remember a professional photographer is a passionate artist practicing the art with a lot of patience and dedication.
