  1. Daniel Chapter 3 Bow or Burn?

  2. What Happens… • Nebuchadnezzar sets up a golden idol (v1) • He requires everyone to bow down and worship it (v4,5) • The punishment for not doing so was to be thrown into the fiery furnace (v6) • “Certain Chaldeans” brought charges against Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego that they would not worship the idol (v8-9) • When confronted, these young, godly men would not bow down to the statue (v16-18)

  3. The golden idol

  4. What happens… • Because of their disobedience, the young men were thrown into the fiery furnace (v21) • They were miraculously delivered (v26) • Seeing this, Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged God, set up rules against blasphemy against Him, and gave favor to Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (v28-29)

  5. The fiery furnace

  6. Deliverance from The fiery furnace

  7. Bow or burn? • If you had been in Shadrach, Meshach, or Abednego’s shoes, would you have ended up in the fiery furnace? • What about your friends, would they have made the same choice? • Why do you think that these young men didn’t have to ponder on this decision? • These all are a matter of conviction.

  8. Exodus 20:1-6 The Ten Commandments: • Do not have other gods before me • Do not make any idol to worship • Do not misuse the Lord’s name • Remember the Sabbath • Honor your father and your mother • Do not murder • Do not commit adultery • Do not steal • Do not lie • Do not covet (be jealous)

  9. What do these scriptures say about idolatry? • 1 Corinthians 10:19-22 • Sacrifices to other gods are offered to demons • Galatians 5:19-21 • Those that practice idolatry and sinful behavior will NOT inherit the kingdom of God • Colossians 3:5-11 • Our impurity is idolatry. • We must rid ourselves of it. • 1 Corinthians 10:1-14 • There is certain punishment for idolatry.

  10. How do we face opposition? • Based on Daniel 3:16-18, the young men knew that the Lord could deliver them. • “But even if He does not…” • We also know that God is able to deliver us, but do not know if He will • How do we face these trials, and oppositions? • James 1:2-4, 12 • We are promised a crown of life • Revelation 2:10-11 • Be faithful until death • Romans 8:31-39 • Nothing can separate us from the love of God • 1 Corinthians 10:13 • God will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bare
