  2. Preservatives • Preservatives are those chemicals which used alone or in combination to prevent the growth of microorganisms in solution. www.AssignmentPoint.com

Properties of Preservatives • Be chemically and physically stable over the shelf-life of the product • Have low toxicity. • It should not be Adsorbed on to the container. • It should be compatible with other formulation additives. • Its efficacy should not be decreased by pH. www.AssignmentPoint.com

Preservatives in solution: • Alcohols, acids, esters and quaternary ammonium compounds are some chemicals which used in solution as preservatives to prevent microbial contamination. • Example: • Alcohol. e.g. Ethanol(> 10%) • Acids. e.g. Benzoic acid(0.1 % to 0.5%) • Esters. e.g. Parabensup to about 0.2%. • Quaternary Ammonium Compounds. • e.g. Benzalkonium chloride(0.002 -0.02%). www.AssignmentPoint.com

  6. Preservatives in suspension • The naturally occurring suspending agents such as tragacanth, acacia, xanthan gum are susceptible to microbial contamination. If suspension is not preserved properly then the increase in microbial activity may cause stability problem such as loss in suspending activity of suspending agents, loss of color, flavor and odor etc. • Example: • Benzalkonium chloride ; (0.01-0.02) % • Disodium edentate ; 0.1 % • Propyleneglycol ; (5-10) % www.AssignmentPoint.com

Preservatives can be transformed into harmful substances after consumption.
