Positive and Negative Shapes Figure-ground relationships
Looking at an artwork • Figure-ground relationship- the tendency to see pictures/patterns with two kinds of shapes. Figures being the main shape on top of or surrounded by the ground.
Negative shapes • The shapes created by the void or spaces behind the main object in a work of art. • Negative shape = ground
Positive Shapes • The objects in a work of art • Positive shape = figure

Making an Artwork using positive and negative shapes • Step 1: Trace the scissors onto your paper. The scissors must touch (!) but not overlap. • Step 2: Draw two shapes (boxes, hearts, hands, etc.) over your scissors. See example. • Step 3: Fill in the negative and positive shapes according to the example.
