  2. Entstehungsgeschichte • Erste Version erschien 2004 • Mittlerweile die meistgenutzte Linux-Distribution • Initiator und Hauptsponsor: Multimillionär Mark Shuttleworth

  3. Das Geschäftmodel: • Ubuntu ist als Linux Distribution vollkommen Kostenlos. Es kann runtergeladen oder auf CD bestellt werden • Shuttleworths‘ finanzielle Unterstützung garantiert, dass das Projekt sich unabhängig entwickeln kann • Langfristig soll das Projekt sich über Kundensupport selber finanzieren

  4. Das Geschäftmodel: • Das Projekt sieht vor, dass alle sechs Monate eine neue Version veröffentlicht wird • Versionen werden i.d.R 18 Monate Unterstützt (Ausnahme: Versionen mit dem Prädikat „LTS“ alle zwei Jahre)

Die „Ubuntu-Philosophie“ • Ubuntu steht für mehr als „nur“ ein Betriebsystem • Das Wort Ubuntu kann sinngemäß mit „Menschlichkeit“ oder „Gemeinsinn“ übersetzt werden und beschreibt ebenfalls eine Afrikanische Philosophie • In diesem Sinne hat Ubuntu die Benutzerfreundlichkeit seiner Anwendungen zur obersten Maxime gemacht

Anwendungen sollen leicht zu installieren und aufeinander abgestimmt sein • Der „Gemeinsinns“ Aspekt des Projekts spiegelt sich auch in seiner Online-Community wieder • Selbst Anfängerfragen werden in den Ubuntu-Foren in der Regel schnell und zuverlässig beantwortet • Erklärtes Ziel des Projektes ist außerdem die Überwindung der „Digitalen Kluft“
