  1. Early Detection Monitoring for Quagga & Zebra Mussels: Sampling Considerations and Survey Methods

  2. Who We Are… Ron Smith – Program Coordinator Louanne McMartin – Biologist Jonathan Thompson – Biologist Julie Wolford – Technician

  3. Who We Are… Catherine Mandella – Quagga & Zebra Mussel Specialist, CDFG R3

  4. Who are you… Name… Organization… Position and interest…

  7. Purpose The purpose of this workshop is to provide you with tools and information that will assist you in the development and implementation of an early-detection monitoring program for quagga and zebra mussels that is coordinated and compatible with other early-detection monitoring programs throughout California and Nevada.

  8. Course Objectives • Why Monitoring • Sampling Considerations • Survey Methods • Reporting • Decontamination

  9. Part 1: Why Monitoring

  10. Why Monitor for Q/Z Mussels Initiate eradication strategies before Q/Z become well established or widely distributed. Minimize the spread of Q/Z to other waterbodies. Early implementation of management and control actions. Prevention program as required per CA Code 2302.

  11. Do You Need to Monitor Is your water body at risk… Access and exposure to vectors of introduction Environmental parameters of water body • Calcium depending nutrients/conditions 8 – 25 mg/L • pH range 7.4 – 9.5 • Water temperature 32 – 86 F • Salinity < 6 ppt Check with local CDFG or NDOW contact…
