  3. Who or What is STFC ? • Grant awarding function normally associated with a RC. • National Laboratories and Overseas Facilities.

  4. STFC Defence, Security and Resilience Futures Programme • Challenge led. • The aims of STFC’s DS&R Futures Programme : • Bring the academic disciplines and technical capabilities of STFC and HEIs to bear on the most challenging and highest priority problems in DS&R : • Identify and exploit existing technology and know-how ; • Cost effective development of solutions to unsolved problems ; • Need to transcend academic disciplines. • High impact projects, programmes and partnerships.

  5. Aims of the Day • A joint enterprise between STFC and RUSI. • Today is about trying to better understand the nature of the problems people face and identifying opportunities for research to make a real difference. • Outputs from this meeting.

  6. Aims of the Day • Hoping to identify those questions which, if answered, would significantly affect what people do and/or how they go about it. • Focus on problems rather than solutions. • Try to avoid being constrained by practicalities such as existing research programme priorities, availability of resources etc. • Let the intellectual juices flow!

  7. And Beyond… • First in what will be a series of regular meetings on topical issues in DS&R. • Each meeting will attempt to explore the interface between policy, operations and research. • Suggestions for follow up activity and Ideas for future meetings welcome • and, of course, any constructive suggestions for how we could do better next time! bryan.edwards@stfc.ac.uk
