  2. Hello! Welcome to Back To School Night! My name is Kelly Jenkins and I will be your child’s teacher for the 2014-2015 school year. I am a 2000 graduate of The College of New Jersey and a 2011 graduate of Grand Canyon University with a M.Ed in Curriculum: Reading and Instruction. I have a Standard Teaching Certificate in Pre-K through Grade 3 and I am Highly Qualified in Reading- currently applying for Certification in Teaching Reading. This will be my 14th year of teaching. Prior to joining CSS, I taught 2nd Grade for 8 years and Pre-K for 5 years before that. I have twin brothers who are 13 and just began the 8th Grade! I am excited to be your partner on this journey through First Grade! About Ms. Jenkins

I graduated from Drexel University • I taught in Philadelphia for 14 years before I came to CSS (k, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th grades) • I've been at CSS for 4 years, 3 of which were in Kindergarten • I'm married with 2 children, Santino 4 and Joey 24, I also have a 4 year old grandson Anthony • I love spending time with my family • My favorite subject is Math • Summer is my favorite season because I love going to the beach • The Phillies are my favorite sports team About Mrs. Ciavatto

  4. Reporting absences is a basic responsibility of the parent/guardian of our students.  Parents/Guardians are to call the school 467-5133 ext. by 8:40 a.m. to report a student absent. Our “School Messenger ” automated phone system will continue to be the first call you receive from our district if your child has been recorded absent by the classroom teacher and you have not called to report that absence. If you forget to call in your child’s absence and then you receive a School Messenger automated phone call, please listen to that message and immediately follow the prompts on the message.  Calling the school after you receive the School Messenger message is a critical part of the attendance process andis your responsibility.  Please call immediately so we can verify that your child is absent.   5. On the first day of school, the students made up a list of expectations. We talked about what they would want when they were learning. Then, they came up with these three important expectations. Expectations Follow Directions Be Ready to Learn Make Good Smart Choices

  6. Snacks According to the district’s Wellness Policy, students are ONLY allowed to bring healthy snacks to school. Some examples are: Apples                                                           Orange Slices Baby Carrots                                                  Pineapple Chunks Grapes                                                          Melon Chunks Bananas                                                        Baked Corn Chips Celery Sticks                                                   Fat Free Potato Chips Dried Fruits                                                    Baked Potato Chips

  7. Positive Behavior System We “PAWS” to Be…. Safe Responsible Respectful Kind The BEST that we can be!

  8. This year, we will be using the Frogtastic Behavior Chart to build positive behavior within the classroom. Students’ frogs are "hopped" up the chart for good, PAWS behavior.  Behavior Charts are kept in the student's red folder and updated daily to reflect the child's behavior on that day. Parents are expected to sign the behavior chart each night and return it to school the following day. Classroom Behavior System

  9. Curriculum & Instruction: ELA ELA includes Phonics, Writing, Guided Reading, and Reader’s Workshop Writing Program is Lucy Calkins Guided Reading is small group, differentiated instruction. Reader’s Workshop: interact with the story through meta-cognition and group/partner discussions Phonics Program is Fountas & Pinnell.

  10. Curriculum & Instruction: Math Math is delivered in Math Workshop Format. Small Group & Differentiated Instruction Instruction is student focused and facilitated by the teacher and the Aide. Both ELA and Math incorporates “I Can” statements. I CAN Statements contain a list of all secure skills by quarter.  I CAN Statements allow students to become responsible for their learning because they demonstrate what they can do.  Teachers distribute I CAN Statements in the beginning of the year so parents are aware of the specific skills being focused on during the school year. ~Taken from the District’s website

  11. Birthdays & Invitations We, here at CSS, understand that birthdays are important to students and their families. If you would like to send in a treat for your child’s birthday, please send a note or email in advance to let me know which day is good for you.  The District’s Wellness Policy- which can be found on the website under 'Health Office' – was sent home on the first day of school. As a rule of thumb, any treat that lists sugar as its first ingredient does not comply with the District’s Policy. Cupcakes will not be distributed to students.In Addition: Please keep in mind that distributing birthday party invitations at school is prohibited unless you are inviting all students . Thank you for understanding.
