Section 1: Land and Economy • China is the 3rd largest country in the world. • It has many diverse landforms including: Mountains, deserts, plains, plateaus and rivers • Three major rivers are the Yangtze, Yellow and the Xi (Shee) Rivers • Two major deserts are the Taklimakan and the Gobi Desert.
2. Since 1949, China has been communist. • Communist- The government has a strong control over the economy and society as a whole. • Recently, China’s government has changed the economy to give the people more economic freedom. • As a result, the economy has grown.
Chapter 17, Section 2 1. China’s civilization is more than 4,000 years old. • China was ruled by emperors up until the 1900’s. • Dynasty- a line of rulers from a single family. • A dynasty would hold power until it was overthrown.
2. Ancient teachings of Confucius, Dao and Buddhism still influence the people of china. • Confucius or Kongfuzi- believed that people should be polite, honest, brave and wise. • Daoism- People should live simply with nature. • Buddhism- Meditation, wisdom and morality can help people find relief from life’s problems.
3. Culture- The Chinese are famous for their traditional arts. • Porcelain, pottery, silk, paintings…
Chapter 17, Section 3 • Taiwan and Mongolia have been influenced by Chinese ways and traditions. • Taiwan is an island off the coast of Southeast China. • China does not recognize Taiwan as a separate country.
Taiwan has a high technology industry. • High Technology Industry- factories produce computers and other types of electronic equipment. • If Taiwan declares its independence, China will use force against the island. 3. Mongolia is about the size of Alaska and is a landlocked country. • Landlocked- surrounded by land
For centuries, Mongols were nomads. • Nomad- people who move from place to place with herds of animals. • Some Mongols still lead a traditional lifestyle today.
