Who We Are and What We Do • The Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) is a public policy think-and-do tank. • We convene and support leaders who tackle the biggest issues facing North Carolina's future.

Why Creativity Can’t Wait • North Carolina companies can no longer compete on price alone to stay ahead. • N.C. lost 130,000 jobs in 2009 (276,000 since January 2008) and we are expected to add only 32,000 jobs in 2010. • N.C. must think our way out of the recession by generating intellectual capital and rethinking design.

New Thinking, New Jobs • Creative workers are found in N.C. in all sectors of the economy. • Jobs pay above the state average and are more resilient in economic downturns. • Creative workers are 5.5% of N.C.’s workforce. • Creative job growth outpaced overall job growth in N.C. from 2002-2009 (18% vs. 8%). • Creative work increased faster in NC than in the U.S. as a whole (18% vs. 13%).
New Thinking, New Jobs • 15 industries with highest concentration of creative workers employed 4.5% of N.C.’s workforce in 2008. • Top creative industry growth rates (2002-08): • Internet publishing and broadcasting (167%) • Science and engineering research (90%) • Specialized design (37%)
