The erie canal begins • The Erie Canal is a waterway that travels from Buffalo to Albany. It is different from other water passages because it was man made. • In 1810 Dewitt Clinton suggested digging the Erie Canal but president Thomas Jefferson laughed at the idea. • The Erie Canal was built so people could send goods faster and cheaper. Also it was built in 1817 and finished in 1825. It took 8 years to build the Erie Canal. • Dewitt Clinton and the immigrants helped build the Erie Canal.
Geography • Lake Erie and the Atlantic Ocean are the 2 bodies of water that are connected to the Erie Canal. • Before the Erie Canal was built, it took 1 month to travel from Albany to Buffalo, but after it was built it took 1 week. • Buffalo, Albany, Troy, Syracuse and Rochester are some cities that are along the Erie Canal in New York State.
How the erie canal is/was used • The Erie Canal was useful to many people. It made trade a lot cheaper and faster. • It also opened markets for the West and the Midwest. • The Erie Canal linked the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes together. • The Erie Canal transformed America. Before it was built the only way to get from the Eastern seaboard to the Great Lakes was on a complicated route. It also saved New York a lot of money. • The Erie Canal is still used today. The Canal is a perfect spot for people who canoe to relax and have fun.
fACTS About the erie canal • The Erie Canal cost 7 million dollars to build. • The length of the Canal is 363 miles. The width is 40 feet and the depth is 4 feet. • A lock is a gate that opens and closes and changes the water level so that the boat doesn’t crash. • Locks helped boats pass from a section of the Canal at one water level to another. • The gates from the locks opened at an angle pointed upstream. • The boat were flat bottomed.
About us(The Amazing authors) • Hi, I’m Sabrina and I like to learn. I like to learn about interesting things such as the Erie Canal. I was born in New York and I love Texas. I also have 2 brothers and love to play soccer. I found out lots of interesting things about the Erie Canal. My favorite thing though is that such an interesting piece of history is in our backyards. • Hi, I’m Trinity Harrison. I like the color green, blue, purple and black. I love animals, poems, and I have 1 brother. I was born in Alaska. When I started the Erie Canal project I found out many new things. I found out it took 8 years to build the Erie Canal, and when I read more I found out it went from Albany to Buffalo. Sabrina Trinity
