Biography His father was his first teacher. Drunken, abusive father tried to promote Beethoven as a prodigy.
Biography In 1778 when Ludwig was 8 years old, he was forced by his father to hold a concert in Koln. In 1782 Beethoven met Neefe, his first real teacher.
Biography In 1787 Beethoven went to Vienna to study with Mozart. He had to go back to Bonn as his mother became ill. His mother died and he started taking care of his family.
Biography In 1792 Beethoven moved back to Vienna. He took lessons from Haydn and other teachers such as Salieri, Albrechtsberger, and Schenk. He was taught by the greatest teachers of Vienna at that time.

Symphony # 5 in C Minor Premiere performance didn’t go well. At beginning it wasn’t appreciated very well. Only a year and a half later it was recognized as a masterpiece.

1st Movement: Allegro con brio Opens with the famous four-note motif: short-short-short-long In traditional sonata form Theme 1 is in C minor Imitations and sequences are used to expand the theme
1st Movement: Allegro con brio Short fortissimo bridge played by the horns before Theme 2 is introduced Theme 2 is in E flat major. More lyrical and smoother. Development section uses modulation, sequences, imitation and includes the bridge
1st Movement: Allegro con brio Brief solo passage for oboe during recapitulation Ends with a massive coda
2nd Movement: Andante con moto In A flat major Lyrical piece in double variation form: two themes are presented and varied in alteration
2nd Movement: Andante con moto Arpeggios are used a lot - an arpeggio is Italian for broken chord where the notes are played in sequence The whole orchestra participates in a series of crescendos to close the movement.
