SKIN/TATTOOS Justin Tomes
SKIN • Protection – covers arteries/veins,bones, muscles, organs, etc.- against pathogens • Insulation – regulate temperature • Perhipheral nervous system • Somatosensation – “touch” • Hair (or lack of) • Nails • Hydration • Synthesizes Vit D and defensive proteins • Variety of shades and hues-response to UV radiation-ethnicity • Gradients in color and thickness-textures (callus versus “baby’s bottom” versus scarring)-skin layers and cells as inspiration/sources for art • Canvas for expression -tattoos, piercings, implants • Aging effects-decrease in hydration-more elastic-balding, graying
SKIN • DERMAL LAYERS- EPIDERMIS -Different strata (layers) -Replicate via mitosis in the bottom layer (strata basale) and daughter cells move up to a higher strata -during this process the cells differentiate and become highly organized
SKIN • DERMAL LAYERS-DERMIS-made up of connective tissues-provides strength and elasticity-location of mechano receptors (nerve endings; somatosensation)-location of hair follicles, sebaceous and apocrine glands, blood and lymphatic vessels
SKIN • BODY ECOLOGY-secretes fatty acids that kill pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi • Harsh chemicals and synthetic soaps may wash away those acids • Affected by seasons-dry in winter, more acne during seasonal fast (purging toxins)
SKIN/TATTOOS • Canvas for expressing opinions and beliefs-Style- traditional, trash polka, abstract, watercolor, etc. • Display social status, family history-Maori and Polynesian -Yakuza • Sexual selection (do you prefer a member of the opposite gender to have tattoos?). Social acceptance/recognition. • Skin grafts (containing tattoos) from famous people or tattoo artists- like a “framed original”)
SKIN • SOMATOSENSORY STRIP (s1) • Strip of the cortex that stretches from ear to ear • Sectioned off into every part of the body • Areas with more receptors (hands) have more “real estate” • If an area of this is damaged sensitivity is decreased in the corresponding surface
SKIN • Receptors (mechano, thermo, nociceptors) are modified nerve endings of sensory neurons with axons that run directly to the spinal cord • Spinal cord contains a dorsal column track (transduction: convert stimuli into sensory impulses) • Neurons detect internal and external changes in the environment -convert the energy of the sensation into electrical signals -signals are received in the brain
SKIN • Skin is perceived (eyes)-optic nerve-optic track that wraps around the middle of the brain to get to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN)-axons “fan out” through deep white matter (coordinates communication within brain).-Radiates into the primary visual cortex (v1) (pattern recognition).
SKIN • We may associate patterns with specific “types” of people- Biased against/for tattooed population- Ethnicity • Signals about health-age (wrinkles)-cancer (melanocytes)-sickness (pale skin)
