Review Chapter 4: ALM • Review in your group • Background information (Where did ALM come from?) • Theory (behavioral psychology) • 4 skills and ALM • Objectives • Types of Learning and Teaching activities (pick 2 to explain and give an example sentence)

The birth of Alternative Approaches and Methods • 1970-1980 major shift in language teaching • Growing interest in communicative approaches • shift from grammar to communication focus • alternative methods include ones developed outside mainstream language teaching • main methods discussed in second half of course (Part III of textbook)
Alternative Approaches and Methods Project • Individually or in groups of 2, pick one approach/method to present in class • Presentations will be 5-7min • Feel free to make a PPT, poster, make handouts, etc. • Bonus points for creativity (make a skit, do an interview) • You must cover • The method’s background and theory • Design • Procedure • Any special notes (including it’s popularity and use today)
#1 Challenge: Present Method in an interesting and engaging way! • Help your students effectively learn the new content • Keep it simple, don’t overwhelm them with too many details, just what is most important (i.e. the “take home message”) • Use handouts and visuals to make learning memorable
