A system restore comes as part of the windows OS and was first included in Windows ME. It is most commonly used set a restore point on the computer before making any major changes to the system.
Windows XP only restores 12% of the data stored on the drive. You can use system restore to create a system image to burn to a Compact Disc, you can then restore from this disc. This is good because if you have a hard drive failure then you will loose all the system restore points you have saved so its good to keep a backup.
