Before We Begin... What are the basic parts of a plant?
Plant Structure • Roots • The roots are used to stabilize the plant in the ground, and absorb water and nutrients from the soil. • Stem • The stem moves food, water, and nutrients through the plant • Leaves • The leaves help absorb sun light, that allow the plant to make food for itself • Flowers • Flowers are used for plant reproduction
Plant Growth • What does a plant need to grow to be strong and healthy? • Water • Water keeps the plant hydrated • Soil • Soil provides plants with the nutrients it needs to grow • Consistent temperature • Just like people, plants need a certain temperature so they do not freeze or overheat • Sun light • Sun light is needed so plants can go through the process of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis What does a plant need and what must a plant do to forgo the process of photosynthesis?
Recipe to Photosynthesis • Ingredients: • Light Energy- from the sun • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) • Chlorophyll- found in the cells of the leaves • Water- gathered from the soil
Recipe to Photosynthesis • Steps to Complete Photosynthesis • 1. The chlorophyll in the leave’s cells absorb light from the sun (light energy) • 2. The sun’s energy splits the water molecules (H2O) into separate elements: hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O2) • 3. The hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide (CO2)- what people breathe out- to make food for the plant • 4. After the food is carried to other parts of the plant (remember it is made in the leaves), the extra oxygen is released! (The very oxygen we breathe)
Your Task • Draw and label the process of photosynthesis in your science notebook. Be sure to include all of the steps to the process, as well as plant parts and their names. • *Use your notes to help you draw your picture!
