SmartMove Migrate, Move, Copy, and Archive Data • Move less active data from primary storage • Keeps the data accessible A Policy Engine • Easy to implement business defined policies Non Invasive Approach • SmartMove sits outside of the critical data path • Invisible to the users
What is SmartMove? A Policy Engine • Easy to implement business defined policies Move, Copy, and Archive Data • Move less active data from primary storage • Keeps the data accessible Automates Data Management Housekeeping • Efficient use of your storage management team Non Invasive Approach • SmartMove sits outside of the critical data path • Invisible to the users
SmartMove Provides A Fully Automated ILM Solution • Efficient use of your IT resources A Policy Engine • Easy to implement business defined policies Ability to Move, Copy Data • Move less active data from primary storage • Keeps the data accessible Regulatory Compliance • Legal requirements to retain data Greatly reduces traditional backup times
SmartMove Core:Key Aspects • Easy to Use • GUI Interface • Flexible • NAS/Direct Attached • CIFS/NFS • Windows/Unix/Linux • Written in Java • Non Intrusive
SmartMove Core:Flexibility Primary Storage • NFS/CIFS Any NAS/SAN/DAS device (ie: EMC’s Celerra, Hitachi, NetApp Filers, BlueArc Servers, HP’s EFS CGW, HP’s EVA) Any Local Disk Secondary Storage • NFS/CIFS • HP’s EFS Clustered Gateway • HP’s EVA • HP’s StorageWorks FAS • HP’s StorageWorks IAP (via FAS)
SmartMove Core: Removable Media Support • Generic Support • Providing generic support removable media devices • No delete on data remove • Optional No ACL handling • 3rd Party Application Support: • Qstar – Optical jukebox management software • Xendata – Tape Library management software
Combine one or many filters to make rules Schedule to run at suitable time Policy Engine: Filters and Rules Filter by including or excluding: • File Extensions • Name Matching • Owner • Date (e.g. accessed, modified) • Size • Location Rules:
Reporting Module:Data Classification Data Classification Reports • Detailed filesystem analysis. Analyze Data • Analyse data using varied • criteria: Age, type, owner. Easily Identify Problem Areas • Identify undesirable files: .mp3, .avi • Identify target areas for data Migration.
SmartMove/HP Scalable NAS: Scenarios • Tiered Storage • Move data from one tier of storage within HP Scalable NAS to another tier within HP Scalable NAS • Archiving - HP FAS/IAP Integration • Move data from HP Scalable NAS to an HP FAS or HP IAP archiving solution
SmartMove:Tiered Storage Scenario (Animated Slide) SmartMove instance X SATA Drives X FC Drives HP’s EFS Clustered Gateway (Scalable NAS) Step 1 Using SmartMove’sUnMigrate module, identify all files that meet your criteria for moving data back to the faster FC drives Step 4 Delete file on the primary and replace with a shortcut or symbolic link Step 2 Copy the data within the CGW from faster FC drives to SATA drives Step 1 Identify all files that meet your migration criteria Step 3 Verify that copied file is identical to the original. Step 4 Delete file on the SATA drives and clean up the link Step 2 Copy the data from SATA drives to faster FC drives in the CGW SmartMove is now “out of the data path” Step 3 Verify that copied file is identical to the original.
SmartMove: Tiered Storage solution with Tape (Animated Slide) HSM Solution SmartMove instance X HP’s EFS Clustered Gateway (Scalable NAS) HP’s StorageWorks Tape Library SmartMove is now “out of the data path”, and can be removed if desired. Step 4 Delete file on the primary and replace with a shortcut or symbolic link Step 2 Copy the data from NAS to Tape via HSM solution Step 1 Identify all files that meet your migration criteria Step 3 Verify that copied file is identical to the original. An HSM solution can then create a highly scalable longterm archive. Automatically generates duplicate tapes for data protection. Uses an unalterable Worm tape, meeting HIPAA, authentication requirements
SmartMove: Tiered Storage solution with HP’s IAP (Animated Slide) SmartMove instance X HP’s IAP HP’s EFS Clustered Gateway (Scalable NAS) SmartMove is now “out of the data path”, and can be removed if desired. Step 4 Delete file on the primary and replace with a shortcut or symbolic link Step 3 Verify that copied file is identical to the original. Step 2 Copy the data from NAS to HP’s IAP via FAS Step 1 Identify all files that meet your migration criteria HP’s IAP can then create a secure longterm archive to meet today’s compliance requirements.
Advantages of SmartMove integrating to the Clustered Gateway • Non intrusive to HP solution - 44MB install exe. • Works fine with PSFS • Good rules based scheduling engine for migrations. • Appears totally transparent to the end user • although since it uses shortcuts (sym links on *nix) the end user will need to have both the tier1 and tier2 filesystems mounted to get to migrated files. • Archiving support. • Functions nicely under MxS control loaded to shared disk. • Since the thing is java based, all the config data appears to reside in flat files (also documented) in the install directory. Much like backup tools, this software appears to lend itself to managing cluster data from one node, with redundancy capabilities. • “it appears to work like a champ”. • You guys also appear to have avoided putting much if anything in the registry, and so far it looks like I • Admins can control the start/stop of the service via our cluster product, thus making the Smart Move product run H/A.
SmartMove: Flexible Licensing • SmartMove Core • SmartMove UnMigrate/Housekeeping • SmartMove Reporting • SmartMove FileMover Gateway Licensing Model: SmartMove is licensed by the amount of data SmartMove manages on the destination source.
