Imagery • Uses detailed imagery to describe the scenery as well as the characters. Such as his descriptions of the Island of Monte Cristo and Edmond Dantes. • “Edmond gazed very earnestly at the mass of rocks which gave out all the variety of twilight colors, from the brightest pink to the deepest blue; and from time to time his cheeks flushed, his brow darkened, and a mist passed over his eyes.”
Voice Third person- focusing mostly on outward action and behavior rather than the psychological realities of the characters. Does not talk much about the feelings of the characters, but instead focuses upon their actions. Describes Edmond’s steps toward his revenge, but only briefly explains his feelings toward the people he is seeking revenge upon.
Irony • Edmond’s enemies try to make themselves happier by framing him, but in the end their betrayal leads to their own downfall and his success.
The Three Musketeers By: Alexandre Dumas
Tone Starts out lighthearted, when D’artagnan begins his journey to join the musketeers but ends uneasy with the deaths of a few of the main characters. This makes the reader feel emotionally connected with the characters.
Imagery • The Three Musketeers: Uses selective imagery, which puts emphasis on the important features and characters of the novel. Focuses more on the actions of the characters then the setting. • “He fixed his haughty eye upon the stranger, and perceived a man of from forty to forty-five years of age, with black and piercing eyes, pale complexion, a strongly marked nose, and a black and well-shaped mustache.”
Voice Third Person Narrative- Gives descriptions of character actions and plot twists.
