Pre-unit Questions • What comes to mind when you begin the process of writing for publication? • Who will be your audience and what is your intended outcome of your writing? • What research methodology are you most comfortable utilizing? • How can you utilize that research methodology in a study investigating your teaching?
Writing for Publication & Research DesignIntroduction • The intent of this module is to provide means to integrate research design and the writing process. • For many of us, the writing process is the least enjoyable but embracing writing from the beginning of the research process may provide additional motivation to publish.
Writing for Publication & Research DesignIntroduction • Finding an outlet for your research should not be a problem. There is a wide variety of journals that publish classroom and SoTL research (see the resource slide for a small list of journals) • After reviewing the pre-unit questions with a learning partner and thinking about the introductions slides continue with the narrative entitled: Writing for Publication & Research Design
Taking Stock: Writing • Points to consider • Determine what time of day you write best and write at that time • Breaking down the writing process into manageable sections and sub sections • Intro & lit review, Methods, data, participants, assessments, etc • Embrace the process—if you think it will be positive it has a greater chance to being positive
Taking Stock: Writing • Points to consider • Acknowledge you may hit road blocks. Use those times for editing • Utilize a peer to help with initial editing and feedback • Revision is a huge part of the process—almost all manuscripts require revisions from the journal editor
Application Questions • Find the submission guidelines for a few journals and familiarize yourself the requirements • Discuss with a learning partner your concerns about writing and publishing. • Discuss with an experienced writer & researcher their tips at being successful. • Finally, practice
