Setting Up Your Business Goals for Success AmmadAwan Glasgow
Well written goals must meet specific criteria, otherwise your goals may not be tangible and therefore never met. Real goals have direction and bring you to action. They focus on the how you will achieve what it is you want.
The goals must be something you have actual control over. • Closing 200 sales may be an admirable concept, but that goal itself is something that you have absolutely no control over. Can you control what other people do? No. You do, however, have control over the steps that you will take to meet that goal.
Your goals must be specific. What exactly is the step that you are going to take? Perhaps your response is, prospect more. Sure, that is a little bit more specific, but it is still junk. What type of prospecting are you talking about? Who will you prospect? What does prospecting look like?
Your goals must be measurable. When you say you want to do more of something, how much? If you want to know if you are achieving a goal, you have to be able to track it or check it off as being completed. So let's build on the "prospecting more" goal. I will exchange business cards with 100 business owners.
You want your goals to be reasonable.Sometimes we are all guilty of becoming excited and going a little over board with our quest for achievement. We get used to meeting our goals and start making them more challenging. Before you want to commit to a goal you should always remember to ask yourself if you really think you are capable of completing the goal.
You must always commit to completing a goal in a specific amount of time.Time is very important. It prompts you to action and allows you to finish your goal before you start a new one. Giving yourself a time limit is a way to measure your progress and review how you want to continue.
Learning to write proper goals can be challenging because we often forget these 5 criteria. I recommend first writing down your big goals with no regard for the criteria just like we just did.
