Hans Christian Anderson • (April 2, 1805 – August 4, 1875) • Famous for his works in literature. This includes novels, plays and autobiographies, but he was known best for his Fairy Tales. • He was born into a poor struggling family, but was given a full paid education by a director named Jonas Collin who saw literary potential within Anderson. • His first piece of work came in 1828 when he was 23 years it. It was called, “ A Walk from Holmen’s Canal to the East Point of the Island of Amager in the years 1828 &1829.”
He switched to fairy tales after his novels so that he could express his creativity and truly express himself. • Some of his most famous fairy tales are, “The Little Mermaid,” “The Ugly Duckling,” and “The Princess and the Pea.” • His fairy tales often depict his own life experiences expressed in a different way. • His readers range from children to adults.
Denmark Culture • Danish heavily exercise Hygge. Hygge is the act of relaxing with peers and loved ones. • Their favorite holiday is Christmas or Jul. They are more celebrative of Christmas Eve rather than Christmas itself. • Their Christmas Eve dinners consist of sugar-browned potatoes, red cabbage, gravy, and roasted duck or goose. They also eat a rice pudding for dessert.
Danish folklore is made up of folk tales, legends, songs, music, dancing, tradition and superstition. • Danish people often enjoy festivities within their hometowns where they dress up in old fashioned costumes, enjoy food, and dance to music. • An important figure in Danish folklore would be the elf. They often symbolize the power of good and evil.
