Vector Graphics Vector graphics are created from mathematical formulas used to define lines, curves, and nodes (drawing points) Edited in draw programs

Uses of Vector Graphics • Architectural drawings and CAD programs • Flow charts • Logos that will be scaled (resized) • Cartoons and clip art • Internet websites • Fonts and specialized text effects
Advantages of Vectors • Resolution independent – regardless of how much the image is enlarged or reduced, the image definition and quality remain the same • Small file sizes that are easily transferred over the Internet
Disadvantages of Vectors • Lower color quality than raster images • Not good for photographic images
Vector Graphics Software • AI – Adobe Illustrator • Industry standard used by developers of vector graphic s • Used to create, save, and archive original artwork • EPS – Encapsulated Postscript • Meta format – Can be used on raster or vector graphics • Graphics developers generally save a copy of the AI file in EPS format • Preferred format for vendors/clients who use the graphics in publications
Examples View the webpage for examples of logos. The Airbus picture provides an example of three graphic formats applied to vectors, images, and text. Logo examples appear on the left-hand side of the page. http://www.visual-integrity.com/fly-sdk-01.htm
More Vector Formats and Software • SVG – Scalable Vector Graphics • Standard format created by W3C • Versatile, all-purpose vector format • PLT – Hewlett Packard Graphics Language Plot File • CDR – Corel Draw • DXF – AutoCAD • WMF – Windows Metafile
