Module 8 • Tactics • Chess I • Opposition • When the kings are directly opposing each other with an ODD number of squares between them (when they are both on the same colored squares) the king that just moved has opposition. This is important in the endgame (especially when a pawn is involved) for he can block the enemy king from entering territory he controls. • It is white’s move so black has opposition. White can NOT move forward for black can maintain opposition. For example: 1. Kf4 Kf6 or Kh4 Kh6 • Whoever’s move it is can get opposition. For example: 1. …Kc4 or 1. Kc3

If White to move: 1. Kf5 Ke7, 2. Kg6 Ke6, 3. f5 Ke6, 4. f5+ Kg7 and the pawn’s path to promotion is protected by his king.

If black continues bouncing his king between b4 and d4 (from c4) this game would end as repetition draw after three identical positions occur. Black loses opposition when he moves his pawn forward and the game ends in a stalemate.
