  1. Module 7 • Tactics • Chess I • Deflection • Deflection is forcing an enemy piece away from where it is serving a purpose (either defending or attacking) in order to capture an enemy piece, or even to win the game. • White’s knight is attacking black’s b-pawn promotion squarebut black deflects the knight with 1. …Ne4+ 2. N x N b1 = Q • Black’s rook is about to capture white’s a7 pawn. White deflects the rook with 1. Rc2+ R x c2 2. a8 = Q

  2. Module 7 • Tactics • Chess 101 • Deflection • Deflection is forcing an enemy piece away from where it is serving a purpose (either defending or attacking) in order to capture an enemy piece, or even to win the game. • White’s rook is protecting the c pawn and its promotion square, but its black’s move. Black deflects the rook and captures the pawn 1. …Be6 2. Re8 ... Bxc7 • Black’s rook is about to capture white’s pawn. White deflects the rook with 1. Bh7+ K x B 2. Q x R

  3. Module 7 • Tactics • Chess 101 • Deflection • White has a mating net with his queen and rook…but black deflects with: • 1. …Be5 • 2. Q x B f6 x Q • White must now defend against a ‘back door’ mate (…Ra8++)

  4. Drill 7-1 • Chess 101 • Deflection • 1. In this dead even game, white has a great deflection move. What is it? • 2. Why shouldn’t white play BxR? • 3. How does black win with a deflection sacrifice?

  5. 7-1 Answers • Chess 101 • Deflection • 1. Rb8+…QxQ • 2. Because then: …Be7+ and thenBf6 Bxf6++ • 3.…Qxa2+ • 4. RxQRxR++

  6. Create Your Own • Chess 101 • Deflection Moves Here is where YOU become a teacher! Create, save, and turn in at least five questions and answers concerning deflection moves. Make up a story, or two, about deflection moves. Be creative, have fun… …show your teacher and the world what you know about deflection moves!

  7. TEST #9 • TACTICS: Deflection • CHESS 101 • 1. What is black’s deflection move? • 2. What is black’s deflection move? • 3. What is white’s deflection move? • 4. What is black’s deflection move? • 5. What is white’s deflection move? • 6. What is black’s deflection move? • 7. What is white’s deflection move? • 8. What is black’s deflection move?

  8. #9 answers • TACTICS: Deflection • CHESS 101 • …Q x a2+ 2. R x Q R x R++ • …R x B 2. Q x R Qe1+ and then Q x R • Ne4 • …Ne4 to move the queen and then a discover checkmate: B x f3++ (if white queen blocks on g2 then R x Q+ Kh1, then Rg1++) • Rb8 next move is mate with the queen • Rg2+ • Bc8+ • R x B

  9. Module 8 • Tactics • Chess I • Opposition • When the kings are directly opposing each other with an ODD number of squares between them (when they are both on the same colored squares) the king that just moved has opposition. This is important in the endgame (especially when a pawn is involved) for he can block the enemy king from entering territory he controls. • It is white’s move so black has opposition. White can NOT move forward for black can maintain opposition. For example: 1. Kf4 Kf6 or Kh4 Kh6 • Whoever’s move it is can get opposition. For example: 1. …Kc4 or 1. Kc3

  10. Module 8 • Tactics • Chess 101 • Opposition • Black just moved and now has opposition. For example: 1. Kd4 Kd6 or 1. Ke3 Ke7 • In this endgame opposition is critical for the pawn promotion. If White to move: 1. Kf5 Ke7, 2. Kg6 Ke6, 3. f5 Ke6, 4. f5+ Kg7 and the pawn’s path to promotion is protected by his king.

  11. Module 8 • Tactics • Chess 101 • Opposition • Black to move: can he escort the pawn to promotion? 1. …Kc4 (to prevent 2. Kxc3) • 2. Kb1 2. …c2+ 2.Kc1 2. …Kb3 White must move Kc1 or the black pawn promotes next move If black doesn’t move Kc3 white will take the pawn Black must play: Kb3. If black continues bouncing his king between b4 and d4 (from c4) this game would end as repetition draw after three identical positions occur. Black loses opposition when he moves his pawn forward and the game ends in a stalemate.

  12. Drill 8-1 • Chess 101 • Opposition • 1. How does white win from this position? • 2. Black’s move. Must he lose the game? • 3. How does white win in this situation?

  13. 8-1 Answers • Chess 101 • Opposition • 1. Ke6 Kd8 then 2. Kf7 and march the pawn to promotion. Or: 1. Ke6 Kf8 then 2. Kd7 and march the pawn to promotion • 2. No. 1. …Kg7 2. Kf5 Kf7 and keep opposition • 3. 1. Kh4 Kg6 2. Kg4 and keep opposition and advance pawn to promotion.

  14. Create Your Own • Chess 101 • Opposition Here is where YOU become a teacher! Create, save, and turn in at least five questions and answers concerning opposition.
