WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ME MADE OF: • In plants, cell walls are made of cellulose fiber, polysaccharides and proteins. In bacteria, cell walls are made of polysaccharides and peptidoglycan. FUNCTION: • Maintaining/determining cell shape • Support and mechanical strength • Prevents the cell membrane from bursting (resists water pressure) • Controls rate and direction of cell growth • Regulates the cell volume • Has a metabolic role (some proteins in cell walls are enzymes in transport) • Physical barrier to pathogens and water in suberized cells • Stores carbohydrates MISCELLANEOUS: • Not found in any animal cells RESOURCES USED: http://employees.csbsju.edu/ssaupe/biol327/lecture/cell-wall.htm http://library.thinkquest.org/C004535/cell_wall.htmlhttp://texbookofbacteriology.net/structure.html http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu http://biolojoy.blogspot.com http://dbscience2.wikispaces.com http://kconline.kaskaskia.edu
