Why and Where Do Animals Migrate? Trout and salmon migrate to spawning areas to reproduce (a spawn is an egg or eggs of an aquatic animal) . Most of time when you see a flock of birds flying, they are usually migrating to their wintering grounds. Some birds travel farther south than others depending on the species. Birds inherit their instincts to fly south from their parents. The main places where birds go for migration are Pacific, Central, Mississippi, and Atlantic. Monarch butterflies migrate when the feel a chill in the air. At 55°F they can’t fly and anything below 40°F paralyses them.
Why Do Animals Hibernate? Bears have very strong instincts of detecting weather changes. Bears hibernate but not completely without food or water. Occasionally, they might wake up and go to their water and food source and then go back to their den to sleep. Fun Fact! The Common Poorwill is the only hibernating bird in North America. During the winter, it is very difficult for bears to find all of the food they need such as nuts and berries. Therefore, they to hibernate to save their energy.
How Do Dogs Know When There is Going to be an Earthquake? Dogs have different instincts that humans don’t have which can cause them to know more about something that we don’t. When an earthquake happens, two types of waves are formed, the P wave and the S wave. Humans can’t feel the p wave but dogs can so that’s when they know when there will be an earthquake.
How Do Plants Know When to Bloom? The phytochromes can trigger the release of different hormones which should cause a plant to bloom, drop its leaves, or begin to form a seed. What triggers a response to the plants to make them bloom are various pigments, called phytochromes. Pytochromes allow photo periodic plants to know how many hours of light or dark they get in a twenty-four hour period.
Birds and Rainstorms The shelter that they usually go for during rainstorms are under rocky overhangs, in caves, or other naturally safe places such as hollow trees. Birds often go to places low to the ground when heavy storms hit, so they will stay out of the way of swinging branches on trees. When birds feel a strong gust of wind they think that rain is coming so they find a new place to visit or live until the storm has passed.
