Addressing policy needs through integrated research: the example of the PASTA project Prof. RegineGerike - on behalf of the PASTA consortiumInstitute for Transport Studies - BOKU www.pastaproject.euwww.rali.boku.ac.at/verkehr.html
The urban challenge • Close linkage between citizens’ health and transport systems’ performance, we know: • Half of all trips shorter than 5 kilometres are undertaken by car. • Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for death worldwide. • Globally one in three adults is not active enough. The policy challenge: How can we effectively increase the amount of physical activity of citizens in the urban environment? Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies
Translating the policy need into research questions: Impacts of physical activity Safety Air pollution • Determinants of physical activity Health Cost Relationshiptransport/non-transportphysicalactivity Personal attributes Comparison and assessment of policy practice Social, physicalenvironment, interventions Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies
Transdisciplinary Research for answering policy and research questions: SocietalChallenges Scientific Challenges Formation Common Research Object ProductionNew Knowledge Interdisciplinary Integration SocietalDiscourse Scientific Discourse Resultsfor Scientific Practice ResultsforSocietal Practice Transdisciplinary Integration: Evaluation of New Knowledge foritscontributiontosocietalandscientificprogress Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies
This is where PASTA comes in: • Connect dots sustainable transport – health • Identify key factors active mobility/travel as part of people’s everyday lives • Assess a range of related approaches and policy options; • Longitudinal survey on physical activity, travel, road traffic collisions and air pollution • Up to 14,000 people from seven European cities • Produce a tool and guidance for policy makers. Support evidence-based policy making, using a transdisciplinary approach Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies

1. Bringing together the right people: policy makers and an interdisciplinary group of researchers - Strong emphasis on the involvement of policy makers from the start of the project - An interdisciplinary group of researchers from a leading institutes and research - Support from an advisory of experts in the fields of sociology, planning and health Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies

3. Creating a useful tool and guidance for policy makers Project findings will feed into the redevelopment of WHO/Europe Health Economic Assessment Tool (HEAT) - add new functions and modules. It facilitates population-wide assessment, translating the effects of active mobility measures into a quantitative evidence-based, evaluation. This tool, together with guidance on good practice, will be made available for free online. Regine Gerike, BOKU Vienna, Institute for Transport Studies
