Modeling Nanostructured Systems Outside of EquilibriumZhi-Feng Huang, Wayne State University, DMR 0845264 • The PI and collaborators are working on the dynamic processes of nanostructure formation and evolution during strained film epitaxy, which are of fundamental importance and great interest in the fabrication of novel nanostructured materials and devices. • The corresponding nonequilibrium phenomena are studied via modeling and simulation across 3 different scales: microscopic (with crystalline details), mesoscopic (for nanoscale surface profiles), and continuum. • We have performed systematic analysis of various strained film properties based on the phase-field-crystal methodology, and identified a new scaling behavior of strained island size (see the top figure). • A main feature of our multiscale study is that it can maintain the efficiency advantage of the continuum • approach through coarse-grained processes, without losing significant effects due to the discrete nature of the crystalline material structure. Modeling Nanostructured Systems Outside of EquilibriumZhi-Feng Huang, Wayne State University, DMR 0845264 • As an integrated part of this CAREER program, an education and outreach project has been carried out to promote K-12 science education in the Detroit area serving underrepresented minority students. • The PI is working with Ms. Kavita Sadwal at Detroit International Academy (an all-girl minority high school (in the Title I program), with mostly African American students), and Mr. Michael Lemanski who is a Wayne State undergraduate in College of Education. • We have finished the 1st stage of topics research, subject materials preparation, and the design of related classroom applications. • We are currently working on the implementation of classroom teaching applications, instruction of high school students’ Science Fair projects, and the development of new lesson plans.
