Modeling Nanostructured Systems Outside of EquilibriumZhi-Feng Huang, Wayne State University, DMR 0845264 • The PI and collaborators are working on the dynamic processes of nanostructure formation and evolution during strained film epitaxy, which are of fundamental importance and great interest in the fabrication of novel nanostructured materials and devices. • The corresponding nonequilibrium phenomena are studied via modeling and simulation across 3 different scales: microscopic (with crystalline details), mesoscopic (for nanoscale surface profiles), and continuum. • We have performed systematic analysis of various strained film properties based on the phase-field-crystal methodology, and identified a new scaling behavior of strained island size (see the top figure). • A main feature of our multiscale study is that it can maintain the efficiency advantage of the continuum • approach through coarse-grained processes, without losing significant effects due to the discrete nature of the crystalline material structure. Top: Data collapse and scaling of island wavenumber from mesoscopic/microscopic (PFC) modeling; Bottom: 3D strained islands from continuum elasticity modeling.
