Lau II - Stale Amland Introduction: • The first Press Commission of Pakistan was setup in 1954. • The Press Commission was reconstituted in 1958. • On October 26, 2002, the Press Council of Pakistan came into existence by virtue of Press Council of Pakistan Ordinance, 2002. • PCP consist of 19 members .
Functions: The Press Council of Pakistan is an autonomous and independent body which issue and monitor good standards of media practice. The main ambits of the Council are: 1- To Ensure free, Responsible and Independent Press) 2- To receive complaints about the violation of Ethical Code of Practice relating to newspapers, News agencies, Editors and Journalists. 3- To revise, update, enforce and implement the Ethical Code of Practice for the newspapers, News agencies, Editors, Journalists and publishers as laid down in the Schedule to this Ordinance.
Functions: • The Council will act as shield to the freedom of the press on one side and ensure responsible press in the country, on the other. It may receive complaints by newspapers, journalists, any institution or individual against federal/provincial governments or any org. including political parties for interference in free functioning of the press.
Pakistan Federal Union Of Journalists • The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists often referred to as The PFUJ is the first journalistic association of South Asia, representing journalists of an entire country; Pakistan. • PFUJ was established in 1950 and is associated with the International Federation of Journalists IFJ. • Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) is arguably South Asia’s first association representing the journalists of an entire country. To its credit, in the 50-odd years since its inception it has always stood out as a symbol of freedom of speech. • PFUJ’s constitution was adopted at the Pakistan Working Journalists Convention, which was held in Karachi in April of 1950. Delegates from home as well as from abroad took part in the event which paved the ground for the establishment of PFUJ. • The inauguration of the convention was witnessed by newsmen from the Delhi Union of Journalists, besides some federal ministers and members of the diplomatic corps.
Working: • As per its constitution, PFUJ was to work towards the betterment of the economic conditions of journalists. • It was also tasked with the onerous responsibility of creating conditions in which the media could work without intimidation. • Plus it was made to ensure that the media has been given proper freedom and that journalists are working freely without any fear in Pakistan. The envious position of PFUJ’s founding president was bestowed by its members on Mr M.A. Shakoor. And its first secretary-general was MrIsrar Ahmad.
CPNE The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has worked since its foundation in 1957 as the combined body of Newspaper Editors in Pakistan to campaign for defense of press freedom and the right of access to information in the service of democratic practice and strengthening of democratic institutions in the country.
Functions The press shall strive to uphold standards of morality and must avoid plagiarism and publication of slanderous and libelous material. The information, including pictures, disseminated shall be true and accurate. Rumors and unconfirmed reports shall be avoided and if at all published shall be identified as such.
Functions The Press shall strive to publish and disclose all essential and relevant facts and ensure that the information it disseminates is fair and accurate. The Press shall respect the privacy of individuals and shall do nothing which tantamount to an intrusion into private, family life and home.
