How does a thermometer work ? A thermometer is a device that measures the temperature of things. You can use a thermometer to tell the temperature: outside or inside your house inside your oven even the temperature of your body if you are sick. Queen Mary School - Science Fair 2009 - 5th grade B
How does a thermometer work ? Theory Early thermometers used water, but because water freezes there was no way to measure temperatures less than the freezing point of water. So, alcohol, which freezes at temperature below the point where water freezes, was used. Queen Mary School - Science Fair 2009 - 5th grade B
How does a thermometer work ? Theory The thermometer measures temperatures in Fahrenheit, Celsius and another scale called Kelvin. Fahrenheit is used mostly in the United States, and most of the rest of the world uses Celsius. Kelvin is used by scientists. The Celsius scale used to be called the “centigrade” scale. Centigrade means “divided into 100 degrees”. Queen Mary School - Science Fair 2009 - 5th grade B
Now we are going to make a thermometer to see how it works: • 1) First we fill the jar 2 cm full with room-temperature water. • And we add red food coloring until the water turns red. How does a thermometer work ? Experiment Queen Mary School - Science Fair 2009 - 5th grade B
How does a thermometer work ? Experiment 2) Then we put a straw in the water, but it can’t touch the bottom of the jar. Queen Mary School - Science Fair 2009 - 5th grade B
3) We use clay to seal the mouth of the jar and to put the straw in place How does a thermometer work ? Experiment Queen Mary School - Science Fair 2009 - 5th grade B
4) We place the thermometer in very warm water and we observe that the red liquid in the straw moves higher How does a thermometer work ? Experiment Queen Mary School - Science Fair 2009 - 5th grade B
How does a thermometer work ? Experiment Queen Mary School - Science Fair 2009 - 5th grade B
How does a thermometer work ? Experiment 5) Then we place the thermometer in cold water and we can see that the red liquid moves down. Queen Mary School - Science Fair 2009 - 5th grade B
How does a thermometer work ? Conclusion So we concluded that this is the correct way to measure the temperature of things. Queen Mary School - Science Fair 2009 - 5th grade B
