Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014 Challenge Question: How and when does a formula help us solve problems (outside of the math classroom)? Warm-Up: Complete the warm-up in your journal with 0 noise level! Name these two triangles based off of their angles and sides Directions: Please come in and get your journal. Title:Area and Perimeter.
What is a parallelogram? • A quadrilateral with 2 pairs of parallel sides. Opposite sides of a parallelogram are congruent. Opposite angles in a parallelogram have the same measure.
Perimeter • Perimeter is simply the distance around an object… it’s rim • Everyday applications of perimeter include the amount of fence needed for your yard or the distance around a football field. • To figure out the perimeter of a rectangle, simply add up all the sides.
Calculating Perimeter • If the length of this rectangle is 10cm and it has a width of 4cm, what is the perimeter?
Area • Area usually deals with how much space an object covers or how much is needed to cover the object… remember everything inside your bedroom is your space • Everyday applications of area include how much carpet is needed in a house or how much material it will take to make a trampoline.
Calculating Area • To calculate the area of a rectangle, simply multiply the length by the width. length x width = area If a rectangle has a width of 6 feet and a length of 8 feet, what is the area?
Area of Triangles • Finding the area of a triangle is somewhat different than finding the area of a rectangle. • With triangles, we no longer can use length times width. We now use base times height. • The formula for the area of triangles is: ½ x base x height (or )
Area of Triangles cont. • The height of the triangle is the distance from the base to the point farthest away, measured along a perpendicular line. • The height of this triangle is 4 inches and the base is 6 inches, what is its area? H B
Distance Around a Circle • The distance around a circle is not called perimeter. It is called the circumference. • To calculate the circumference of a circle we need to use pi. The value for pi is 3.14. Pi is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of ANY circle.
Presentation: • How did we do today? • Did we complete the daily warm-up with 0 noise level? • Did we maintain classroom operating procedures? • Did we take all the notes without being asked several times?
Learning Together • Complete the odd numbers on the Area & Perimeter WS • You have 25 minutes
Learning Together: • How did we do today? • Did we maintain classroom operating procedures including 0 noise level? • Did we work toward our learning goals? I can use my knowledge of shapes and the formula chart to calculate area and perimeter. • Did we ask our partner for help and use our notes before asking the teacher?
Just For Me • Complete the even numbers on the Area & Perimeter WS • You have 20 minutes
Just For Me • Complete the Ticket out the Door for Wednesday, 2/26/14.
Wrap-Up • Homework: Complete the Area & Perimeter WS if not finished… due on Friday!!! • Supplies: Take your journal home if needed. Place any supplies used back in the supply bins. • How did we do today? • Did we maintain classroom operating procedures? • Did we work toward our learning goals? I can use my knowledge of shapes and the formula chart to calculate area and perimeter. • Did we complete the tasks?
