THE ACCESSIBLE JOURNEYFACT OR FICTION ?? Presentation by Alexia Pickering ACCESSIBLE OPTIONS
WHAT IS THE ISA? • the acronym of the International Symbol of Access • its origin dates back to 1969 when RI (Rehabilitation International) selected it. • The design is registered as ISO 70001984 • It has three functions (a) Information (b) Directional (c) Locational • It sits within the current Building Act as sec 120 • Responsibility of building owner to display • Responsibility of the Councils to enforce • Worldwide it is the most recognised symbol
WHY THE ISA? • seeing it displayed on buildings, adverts and in websites shortens time when planning travel • because travellers with disabilities need to know which facilities are accessible • because 19% of the population have a long term disability - the disability sector represent a niche market. They spend the same as others. • ISA sign is sufficient- words not required • accessible facilities not disabled toilets, disabled rooms, disabled carparking • emphasis on the positive not the negative
Accessible facility suits EVERYONE not just DISABLED
THE ACCESSIBLE ROUTE • enables unaided or independent access • applies to all parts of a building and its surroundings i.e. • continuous route from street boundary or carparking • benchmark for measuring compliance is approachability, accessibility, usability
consideration must be given to vertical and horizontal access accessible route footpaths ramps, carparks entrances, doors reception counters interiors of units etc. toilets & showers washbasins kitchens laundries controls guests with disabilities should be able to carry out “normal activities” DETAILS OF DESIGN -affect usability
The height of flush control at 1300mm could not be reached by most users
BENEFITS • marketing edge • facility which is usable by all sectors • enhanced usability of buildings • safer and more ergonomically efficient • repeat business
