Character Protagonist Antagonist • The main character and the problem of the story revolves around him or her. • The character or force that opposes the protagonist.
Characterization • A process of showing what a character is really like. • Direct characterization – the writer simply tells what the character is like. Such as Example: “Susie felt lonely and frightened.” • Indirect characterization – the writer shows what a character is like by: • describing what the character says or does • how a character looks • what other characters say about him or her.
Appearance • How the character looks, what clothing they wear, how neat or sloppy the character is…
Personality • The way the character acts • Friendly, generous, snobby, ungrateful, etc.
Background • Where is the character from? • School? • Experiences that the character has had?
Motivation • Why does the character do what she does? • What does he like or dislike? • Goals, aspirations, dreams, needs?
Relationships • Who is the character related to? • How does the character relate to other people?
Conflicts • Is the character involved in a struggle? • What kind of struggle-internal or external? • Why?
Change • Does the character change, learn or grow during the story? • Static character – does not change • Dynamic character - changes
