What is it? • Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography • RIP is based on two principles of Electromagnetism. • Faraday’s Law states that the induced EMF in a closed loop equals the negative of the time rate of change of magnetic flux through the loop. So a current applied through a loop of wire generates a magnetic field normal to the orientation of the loop. • Lenz’s Law states that induced current opposes the change in flux producing it. So any change in the area enclosed by the loop creates an opposing current within the loop directly proportional to the change in the area. • To create a closed loop: An elastic belt with a sewn-in coiled wire is worn around the chest and/or abdomen. An oscillating current is passed through the belt, generating a magnetic field per Faraday’s Law. • When the patient breathes the cross sectional area contained by the closed loop (the volume under the belt) changes which changes the oscillator frequency which is converted to an analog level that can be measured per Lenz’s Law.
