  3. Sentences • We have learned that there are three types of sentences that are used often. • Can someone explain each type of sentence?? • Simple-ONE independent clause (it can be a complete sentence). Does not use conjunctions. • Compound-TWO independent clauses that must be connected with a COMMA and a FANBOYS CONJUNCTION. • Complex-ONE independent clause and ONE dependent clause that are combined with a BISAWAWE CONJUNCTION.

  4. Conjunctions Compound Sentences Complex Sentences FOR AND NOR BUT OR YET SO BECAUSE IF SINCE ALTHOUGH WHILE AFTER WHEN EVEN THOUGH

  5. Can You Give Me Examples?? Independent Clauses Dependent Clauses 1. 2. 3. 4. 1. 2. 3. 4.

  6. What Is the Best Way to Combine these Clauses?? 1. James walked to the yard. He wanted to play with his friends. 2. I worked hard all day at my job. I needed the extra money. 3. The volcano erupted. It destroyed many homes and lives. 4. You shouldn’t watch television all day. It can hurt your eyes. 5. Cats sleep the most out of all animals. They must sleep all day.

  7. Partner Handout You and a partner are going to work together to answer each question on the handout. YOU MUST WORK TOGETHER. Both partners should be able to answer each question when called on. If one person is unsure, make sure the other can explain it. Please make sure you ask me if there are any questions. Answer all questions on the left side of your notebook.

  8. Spelling!! • Some rules we talked about are: • i before e except after c, or when sounded like ay as in neighbor and weigh • The “f” sound has numerous spellings: ff, ough, ph, augh • There are many homophones that you need to be careful of, such as: there, their, they’re, it’s its, blue, blew, read, red, etc. • When adding a suffix, you need to be cautious of the letters involved. • We will review some more, but the majority of spelling is learned through reading and practice!! • Please take out your foldable to help you.

  9. Affect vs. Effect The words affect and effect are often misspelled and misused. The majority of the time you use affect with an a as a verb and effect with an e as a noun. Affect with an a means "to influence," as in, "The arrows affected Ardvark," or "The rain affected Amy's hairdo.“ Effect with an e has a lot of subtle meanings as a noun, the meaning "a result" seems to be at the core of all the definitions. For example, you can say, "The effect was eye-popping," or "The sound effects were amazing," or "The rain had no effect on Amy's hairdo."

  19. Writing Consistency and Organization • We have reviewed writing consistency numerous times. • We also just learned about different types of patterns. • Chronological-Chronological order is also called time sequence!! When an essay is written in this order, it simply means that it presents events in the order in which they occurred, from first to last. • Spatial-In this pattern, items are arranged according to their physical position or relationships. This is used to describe places or objects. • Order of importance-In this order, the most important events, ideas, or facts appear first. • Compare/contrast-A compare and contrast pattern arranges information according to how two or more things are similar to or different from one another

  20. What Type of Pattern are the Following Paragraphs?? The cabin was a small two-story building with a deck. On the first floor was a long, narrow kitchen, which was lined floor, walls, and ceiling with a wood so old that it was black from years of lamp oil and wood smoke. Across from it was a square open stairway, which led to a single room twice as large as the kitchen and extending up the stretch of a hill. To the right at the top of the stairs was the bathroom; the floor of the shower was always gritty with sand, and the showerhead yielded no more than a drizzle of cold water. Over the kitchen, facing the river, was a porch and a narrow screened room with several iron beds, each one piled with musty, lumpy mattresses two or three deep. The cabin needed a lot of work to look nice! Spatial Order

  21. Chronological Order Last night I got home late and went straight to my room to do homework. Then, I realized that I needed to make dinner, so I went to the kitchen. I decided to make spaghetti and a salad for my whole family. After the dinner was made, I called them all to the table. We ate and talked about our day, which was a lot of fun. Finally, my brother decided we should watch a movie together. At last, we got ready for our next day at school and went to bed.

  22. Order of Importance I am so excited that I received an “A” on my English test. I knew that if I took notes in class and studied them every night that I could do it. I made sure to study my review guide as well. I talked to my friends in class and we had a study session for three days before the test. I also made sure to sleep for eight hours the night before, in order to be well rested.

  23. Compare and Contrast Order People never realize how similar Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia really are. First of all, they both were developing their civilizations around the same time. Equally, they had a social structure that divided people based on their wealth and power. They were also both polytheistic, which means they believed in many gods. They did have some differences though. For example, Mesopotamia had two important rivers, while Egypt only had one. Sumerian scribes wrote on clay tablets, but Egyptian scribes wrote on papyrus.

  24. Writing Consistency and Organization • You are going to have time to practice your skills to fully master this lesson!! • You will be in groups of three. • Each person has a specific role: • Reader: responsible for reading the passage and questions aloud to the group. • Writer: responsible for writing all answers on the page for the group. • Speaker: responsible for sharing with the class all of the comments and answers the group has come up with. • The speaker will also get a chance to defend their answers with the rest of the class. You can agree or disagree with others respectfully. • I will give your group three cards, and you will give them to whoever you choose to be the reader, writer, and speaker. You will have about 20 minutes to complete the handout. YOU MAY WRITE ON THIS. Please make sure everyone is participating and completing their roles!! Speakers will present their answers in 20 minutes.

  25. Compare and Contrast To further support you with compare and contrast, you will work on a handout on your own. I want you to focus on this and read the passage carefully. Your test will be similar, so if you have any questions, please make sure you ask!! Answer the questions ON THE LEFT SIDE OF YOUR NOTEBOOK!!  We will go over the answers in 15 minutes.

  26. Homework!! Study guide due Thursday. Test on Thursday. For your study guide, please go through your notes and write THREE bullet points. These can be vocabulary words, important points, or key words that will be helpful on your test. Complete this on a separate sheet of paper. In total, you should have 15 bullet points (spelling, sentences, organizational patterns, compare/contrast, and writing consistency).
