What is plant adaptation? Biologists use the word adaptation to describe the ways a living thing gets what it needs to survive. Here are a few plant adaptations you can explore for yourself. An example of a plant's adaptations is the size of the leaves it grows. Green plants use sunlight to power their food making. Most food making is done in leaves. Plants also take in air, and lose air and moisture through their leaves. Look at plants that grow in very sunny spots and at plants that grow in the shade. (espsciencetime, 2015)Many plants use flowers to make seeds. A flower that makes seeds usually has to get pollen from another flower before it can make seeds. Some plants have bright colored flowers that catch the attention of insects. As insects visit the flowers to look for food, they move pollen. Other kinds of plants have small flowers that are not brightly colored. These make great amounts of pollen which just blows on the wind. Keep an eye on maple trees, willow trees, and oak trees. How do plants survive in their environments? Our planet has about 260,000 species, or types, of plants. They are found all over the place: your backyard, the rainforests, the deserts, and the poles. (Science Encyclopedia for Kids, 2015) With this video we will go into detail about how the plants adapt and to their environment to live.

Plants and Their Surroundings How do plants survive in their environments? Now that we have finished watching the video we will take this 10 question quiz about plants and how they adapt to their surroundings to get a better understanding of what you have learned and what areas we need to focus more on. Please get in groups of 5 and write your answer on the dry erase board and raise your hand when your team knows the answer.
Putting what you learned into action Here is an example to the right of your next assignment. When you go home notice where plants are growing and the different environments they are growing in. For example if you drive past a swamp and you see a plant in the swamp that you don’t see in dry land. When you come to school tomorrow we will research the different environments you found the plants growing in on the computer to explain how they can grow in that environment. Find at least 3 different environments and draw a picture of what that plant looked like to add to the poster. As you do this assignment remember to have fun!
