  1. IEEE 802.11a & IEEE 802.11nchanges for TGah Authors: Date: 2010-12-20 Jae-Hyung Song, LG Electronics

  2. Abstract Leverage a widely successful standard in available bands. Re-band OFDM and MIMO operation to TGah bands and provide for narrower channels with eight clocking. Keep IEEE 802.11 WLAN user experience through common IEEE 802.11 MAC. Jae-Hyung Song, LG Electronics

  3. Re-banding and narrower channel efforts • IEEE 802.11j-2004 • 4.9 GHz – 5 GHz Operation in Japan • Introduced “half-clocked” operation using 10 MHz channel spacing • IEEE 802.11-2007 • Introduced “quarter-clocked” operation using 5MHz channel spacing • IEEE 802.11y-2008 • 3650 – 3700 MHz Operation in USA • P802.11af D0.08 • Re-band 802.11a OFDM and 802.11n OFDM with scaling to 5 & 10 MHz channel spacing Jae-Hyung Song, LG Electronics

  4. Solutions are available today with up/down converter added to existing silicon. • Future optimized solutions possible for better power consumption and lower cost. • Support WLAN user experience to remain as same with IEEE 802.11e, IEEE 802.11i, IEEE 802.11k, etc. • Use of IEEE 802.11d mandatory to avoid interference in IEEE 802.11ah bands, since the bands are not uniform around the world. Keeping 802.11 User Experience Jae-Hyung Song, LG Electronics

  5. Features for system performance enhancement • MIMO (Separated streams) • A-MPDU • MPDU aggregation of broadcast traffic • A-MSDU • Features to increase reliability • MIMO (Spatial Multiplexing) with Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) and Beamforming help to cope with fading. • Higher sensitivity to the time-selective fading is expected with low-frequency, low-bandwidth • Low-Density Parity Check Codes (LDPC) Features brought by 802.11n Jae-Hyung Song, LG Electronics

  6. References • Draft 802.11af D0.08 • 11-10-536-00-00af-Clause 17 changes for sub 5 MHz channel widths • 11-10-1314-00-00ah-Clause 19 changes for sub 10 MHz channel widths for HT operation Jae-Hyung Song, LG Electronics
