3. Mr. Rogers • "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of "disaster," I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world."

4. Entry Task • Pretend you are an archeologist in the year 2412. You are digging in an area near the old Capital Mall when you come across the remains of what appears to be a religious training center. The letters on the plaque that is unearthed say….ECS. What do you think an archeologist would say about our school as they were discovering our left behind artifacts? Get creative!

5. Intro • Today in History • Washington History • The highest point in Washington is Mount Rainier. It was named after Peter Rainier, a British soldier who fought against the Americans in the Revolutionary War.

6. Why do we study History? • Knowing yourself • Knowing your past gives you a sense of identity. • Knowing Others • History teaches you how you are similar or different than other cultures. • Knowing Your World • The world is shrinking

7. Fossil • A part or imprint of something that was once alive.

8. Artifacts • Objects created by and used by humans

9. Primary Source • An account of an event created by someone who took part in or witnessed the event. • Letters, diaries, laws, court documents and royal commands. • Audio Recordings, Pictures, and Video are modern versions.

10. Secondary Source • Information gathered by someone who did not take part in or witness an event. • Think Gossip! • Research paper using other primary sources
