Communicating Effectively Group Presentation: How to be a Good Conversationalist
Assertiveness • It’s not enough to be a great listener, we must learn how to communicate and express ourselves effectively • Assertion involves • standing up for your personal rights • expressing ideas, needs, feelings and beliefs in direct, honest and appropriate ways • Don’t violate the rights of others • When you are assertive you can • Take compliments and criticisms • Negotiate for what you need • Agree to disagree with another • Ask for clarification when you don’t understand

Negative Consequence of Failing to be Assertive • Passive stance— • avoid anxiety producing conflicts in short-run • Long-run increased sense of anger • Aggressive stance • May achieve temporary release • Long-run lead to poor interpersonal relations
Benefits of Assertiveness • Elicits compliance • Greater respect • Less resentment and dislike from others
Why do people fail to behave assertively? • Fear of loss of approval • Failing to distinguish between assertiveness and aggression • Mistaking nonassertion for politeness or consideration • Mistaking passivity for being helpful • Aggression is often an outgrowth of feelings of powerlessness • Aggression is justified as the only way to get through to people • Aggression is the result of reaching a boiling point and not knowing any other way to interact • Failure to accept your personal rights
