Delegates enjoyed some refreshments and signed up for their two break-away sessionsThere were six sessions to choose from and each of these was offered twice; once at 10am and again at 11.15am
At final count there were 97 delegates that attended – this far exceeded our initial expectations!
After Kevin welcomed everyone, I went through the six break-away session options in greater detail and then Ali introduced the Guest Speaker, well-known Psychologist, Tim Barry who addressed the group on the ‘Y-Generation’, and the challenges of teaching and connecting with these learners
B.Ed Programme Champion, Ang’ Stahlhut led the ‘Smart Board Savvy’ session which was very well-received TeL Champion, Paula Hall really impressed with her ‘From Average to Awesome’ session that focused on effectively jazzing up your PowerPoint slides
SOBT Academic Programme Champion (APC), Etta Tayler generated some interesting discussion around the challenges of Academic Literacy skills Hennie Pelser, tenured lecturer and finalist of the Dr Charles Freyson Teaching Excellence award, explained how simple and yet highly effective Electronic Referencing can be
Trish, from Learning Identity, delivered a session on ‘Teaching to Both Sides of the Brain’ and also provided us with a voucher for a one-on-one ‘Teaching Style Analysis’ session to the value of R1500 ‘Successful Students, what’s their Secret?’ was the title of the session I led and was based on research conducted with our own VC students
After lunch everyone gathered again for a discussion session addressing the gap that exists between a school and a tertiary environment and what more teachers and Varsity College can do to assist students with bridging this divide
