Chapter 11, part D The Prokaryotes:Domains Bacteria and Archaea
Spirochaetes • Borrelia • Leptospira • Treponema: Treponema pallidum, the cause of syphilis Figure 11.23
Spirochaetes • The most distinctive characteristic of this order, however, is their method of motility, which makes use of two or more axial filaments (or endoflagella) enclosed in the space between an outer sheath and the body of the cell. • By rotating its axial filament, the cell rotates in the opposite direction, like a corkscrew, which is very efficient in moving the organism through liquids.
Bacteroidetes • Anaerobic • Bacteroides. In mouth and large intestine • Cytophaga. Cellulose and chitin-degrading in soil
Fusobacteria • Fusobacterium • Found in mouth • May be involved in dental diseases Figure 11.24
Firmicutes • Low G + C • Gram-positive
Clostridiales • Clostridium • Endospore-producing • Obligate anaerobes • Diseases associated with clostridia include tetanus, caused by C. tetani • Epulopiscium Figure 11.14 & 15
Bacillales • Bacillus • Endospore-producing rods Figure 11.16b
Bacillales • Staphylococcus • Cocci Figure 1.17
