  3. Tik’al • Classic name is Mutul • Ahaw (king) • Serious crisis by end of 6th century • 7th century- reconstruction- new rulers & new dynasty. • One of the largest Maya sites • Temple IV measured 229ft. • Population- 90,000 people

  4. Copan • Western Honduras • 1839 Stephens bought it. • Early classic- founded around 5th century • 1st ruler was Yax K’uk’Mo- royal line until 820AD. • Most perfect ball court for classic period • Rulers destroyed former monuments

Classic Splendor: Late Classic Period Yaxchilan Bonampak Politically important during the early classic period Discovered in 1946 Close to the Lacanha river Murals- 800AD Battle and its aftermath Lord Cahn Muwan & wife (Yaxchilan native) Decline & abandoned prior to completion. • Located along the banks of the Usumacinta river • Beautiful stelae representations • Scenes of conquest & ceremonial life • 8+ sweat baths • extensively built with stone hearths and benches • Great system of drainage
